DIY Animal Mugs

Alex and I have always wanted to try out the permanent marker on mug DIY that we’ve seen around the internet for the past few years. It looked like such an easy and fun way to personalize a tea/coffee cabinet! Guess what? It IS easy, fun, and (extra bonus) cheap!

Our initial take on the mug was to draw animal faces (a cat, dog, bunny, and beaver) from the nose down so that we could feel particularly cute while we sipped from them. I love how they turned out!
Making the mugs was so easy.Only 4 easy steps:
Step 1: Buy mugs to draw on. We got our mugs from the dollar store because all we needed was a plain ceramic canvas for our design. If you want an edgier looking cup you could totally do that. It really is a free reign kind of thing.
Step 2: Buy permanent markers (if you don’t already have some). We just used basic black but adding some colour permanent markers would also work well.
Step 3: Pick a design and start drawing on your mug. You don’t need to be too worried about it being perfect. I discovered with a bit of water you could (relatively) easily wipe off a mistake.
Step 4: Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool for at least an hour. Yup! It’s literally that easy. There are endless possibilities for this simple DIY.
We had a few extra mugs left over and I decided to make a completely different mug. I am one of those weirdos who doesn’t drink coffee. I wrote a BBC Sherlock inspired quote on the front of the mug saying, “Just tea for me, thanks”. I love it!
