Pillowcase Project Teaches Students How to Prepare for Emergencies
Nowadays, the Pillowcase Project has spread across the U.S from Red Cross. What exactly the Pillowcase Project is? The Pillowcase Project collaborated to teach youths in third through fifth grade and their families how to carry their belongings in a pillowcase during an emergency. The students will learn about hazards, how to prepare for emergencies and learn how to make an emergency supply kit in a pillowcase, among other skills.
They start going to local schools and teaching children about the Pillowcase Project. They give the students a pillowcase of their own and talk to them about natural disasters that happen in their area, and give them the tools and resources to make that plan happen. They encourage them to fill their personal pillowcase with a comfort stuffed animal, aflashlight, toothbrush, whistle, a book, extra pair of clothes, snack and anything else that they can think of and store it under their bed. That way, if an emergency does come, they know exactly where to find their kit.”
Karen Tomlinson,Red Cross’s Volunteer Coordinator said,“We want people to think about it.You can never be too prepared.”Anyone interested in getting involved with the Pillowcase Project, may call the local Red Cross chapter.
